Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1875-1950), American novelist, born in Chicago, Illinois. Burroughs was a soldier, business executive, gold miner, cowboy, storekeeper, and policeman before he turned to writing as a career. He is known chiefly as the creator of the character of Tarzan, who first appeared in Tarzan of the Apes (1914). More than 20 novels depicting the adventures of Tarzan achieved widespread popularity. The Tarzan books have been translated into more than 50 languages, have sold more than 20 million copies, and have served as the basis for motion pictures, radio serials, television shows, and a comic strip. Burroughs also is known for his science fiction writing. More than 60 of his books have been published.
